ODE Models for the Parachute Problem
نویسنده
چکیده
Classroom discussions relating to the modelling of physical phenomena has experienced a resurgence in recent years. One problem that is accessible to students and mathematically tractable is the motion of skydiver. The basic \parachute problem" is formulated and solved. A simple analysis of the problem raises questions about the applicability of this model. Real-life data is used to propose an extended model. The modiied model is shown to be more physically realistic and is no more complicated than the original problem. This discussion gives equal emphasis to both the modelling and the analysis of the problem.

Maple and the Parachute Problem: Modelling with an Impact
The \parachute problem" involves a rst-order ODE in which the coe cient of air resistance is a piecewisede ned function. This paper focuses on the use of Maple's symbolic, numeric, and graphic tools to facilitate the analysis of this initial value problem. Of particular interest is a qualitative analysis of the solution. The form of the problem most commonly found in textbooks is shown to be ph...
متن کاملModeling Parachute Systems
39 The development of computational models that predict the aerodynamic performance of parachute systems has significantly enhanced the technology of airdrop systems by providing alternatives to or complementing drop tests and laboratory experiments. Increases in the scope and reliability of computational modeling are bringing current technology closer to establishing “virtual proving ground” m...
متن کاملAn algorithm for finding globally identifiable parameter combinations of nonlinear ODE models using Gröbner Bases.
The parameter identifiability problem for dynamic system ODE models has been extensively studied. Nevertheless, except for linear ODE models, the question of establishing identifiable combinations of parameters when the model is unidentifiable has not received as much attention and the problem is not fully resolved for nonlinear ODEs. Identifiable combinations are useful, for example, for the r...
متن کامل2-D Parachute Simulation by the Immersed Boundary Method
Parachute aerodynamics involves an interaction between the flexible, elastic, porous parachute canopy and the high speed airflow (relative to the parachute) through which the parachute falls. Computer simulation of parachute dynamics typically simplify the problem in various ways, e.g. by considering the parachute as a rigid bluff body. Here, we avoid such simplification by using the immersed b...
متن کاملAn Exploration of the Similarities and Differences Between Processing Text- and Visually Based Narratives
The title of this chapter explores to what extent there are shared cognitive systems that support the processing of narratives across print and visual media. An initially obvious answer to the question is no, given that viewing images and reading texts involve different cognitive and brain systems during encoding. In fact, we contend that there are aspects of how narratives are conveyed across ...
